The most-visited attraction at Harvard, the Harvard Museum of Natural History "combines historic exhibits with new and changing multimedia exhibitions." It opened in 1998 and welcomes over 250,000 visitors every year.
Here is some of what you can discover at this museum near our Cambridge apartments:
Found on the balcony, the Birds of the World Gallery highlights the surprising diversity of birds. The collection features hundreds of specimens. You will learn how various species differ in habit, size, and more. In addition, the display tells of the latest scientific discoveries about the evolution of these feathery creatures.
Learn about wildlife from Central and South America. One of the many specimen highlights includes the jaguar. These majestic animals are the largest of South America's big cats. They're excellent swimmers and can move quickly through the water when looking for prey. Only 15,000 jaguars remain in the wild. With a decreasing population trend, they are listed as Near Threatened.
Don't miss visiting the Glass Flowers gallery. It houses one of the museum's most well-known collections. The incredible flowers were created by the father and son duo of Leopold and Rudolf Blaschka. These skilled Czech artisans created 4,300 models between 1886 and 1936. The museum restored the gallery in 2016. It features the original historic wood and glass displays, along with new state-of-the-art lighting that enhances the visitor experience.
After exploring the fascinating exhibits at the Harvard Museum of Natural History, enjoy a night of food and fun at a nearby Irish pub. You can sample Guinness stew, shepherd's pie, and so much more.
