When the Boston Public Library opened in 1848, it became the country's first large free municipal library. While it offers millions of books, there is so much more to discover. Here is some of what you can find near our Cambridge apartments:

Norman B. Leventhal Map & Education Center

At the Norman B. Leventhal Map & Education Center, you'll find one of America's "most significant centers for the public study of historical geography." It's located on the first floor of the McKim Building, and boasts over 250,000 geographic objects. The center welcomes everyone to come and explore, and its spaces and programs are free.

Public Art & Architecture Tour

Learn more about the Boston Public Library's central location during the Public Art & Architecture Tour. You will see unique architecture spanning three centuries as the guide highlights treasured art pieces and decorative installations throughout. The tours take place on select days and times. They last about one hour and are limited in size.

Classes and Other Events

The library offers a wide range of classes and events for adults that provide a fun way to enhance your skills or try something new. Learn to write fiction, show off your chess-playing techniques, or meet new friends by joining the Crochet Club.   

Boston Public Library Gift Shop

 Nestled within the Newsfeed Café, the Boston Public Library Gift Shop features a unique selection of ever-changing literary-inspired treasures. Purchases help the library remain free for everyone. Pieces include works by local artists and other exciting finds. The shop is open Tuesday through Sunday until 5:00 p.m.
