For a fun adventure back in time, head to the Lyman Estate. Less than 20 minutes from our Cambridge apartments, it's where you can explore a historic mansion and greenhouses. Here is some of what you can discover during your visit:

Lyman Estate

Also known as the Vale, the Lyman Estate was constructed in 1793 for shipping merchant Theodore Lyman and his family. The Lyman's expanded the home in 1883, and remodeled it in the Colonial style 35 years later. Today, this grand country estate is a National Historic Landmark. During the tour, you will learn about the Lyman family and the home's unique architecture. Tours are offered on the first Saturday of every month at select times.

Lyman Estate Greenhouses

Step into the Lyman Estate greenhouses to explore some of the country's oldest surviving greenhouses. The impressive complex includes the 1804 Grape House, the 1820 Camellia House, and the 1930 Orchid House. They offer something new to see with every season, and the horticultural staff is on hand to answer any questions. Before heading home, stop by the Sales House to shop for plants. They make for the perfect gifts, no matter the occasion. Five large specialty plant sales are also held throughout the year.

Hosting an Event

Whether you are planning an intimate wedding, a family reunion, or your grandparents' 50th wedding anniversary, the Lyman Estate offers a unique setting to host your event. You and your guests can sip cocktails in the garden and show off your moves in the ballroom, "where the waltz was introduced to Boston society."
